- Why are you changing from Postini?
- There are a variety of reasons for the change. VOLstate has been contemplating changing platforms for spam and virus control for over a year. With the recent announced acquisition of Postini by Google, we felt it was time to make a change. While Google is a great company, we would rather deal with a company that is focused on doing spam and virus control better than anyone else, not one that is primarily a search company.
- What technology does the new filter use?
- The “Can-it” filter by Roaring Penguin Software uses the latest and best techniques to filter spam. In addition, it shares its filtering data with ISPs worldwide to quickly identify new types of spam and react quickly to filter that spam as well. In addition, for our more technical users, the filter has a vast tool set that makes it much more flexible and powerful than Postini. For instance, a user can choose to have spam “tagged and delivered”, which means that rather than trapping the spam, the subject line is changed to include the word “spam”. A user can set up a message rule to sort the spam based on that keyword in the subject.
- Are messages still virus filtered?
- Yes. The new filter uses the latest virus definitions available and filters out viruses. Rather than trapping viruses, the new filter discards them. Users told us that they grew weary of the constant message from Postini that it had stopped a virus. Now, the viruses are merely thrown away and you are not bothered by them at all.
- I’m not a technical user and I don’t like having to check my spam filter trap. Do I have to log in to the filter?
- No. You can just let the messages auto-delete that are in your trap. Alternatively, you can log in once, click “simplified interface”, choose your option and never have to mess with it again. The filter will do a good job of throwing away the spam without intervention.
- I still have spam I need to check in Postini. Can I still log into Postini?
- Yes, you may continue to log into the Postini message center until midnight, August 31, 2007. However, new spam is in your new spamtrap at http://spamtrap.volstate.net/canit/.
- What about my password?
- It is the same password that you have been using in Postini and to check your email.
- What about my approved senders?
- All approved senders have been imported to the new filter.
- How about some quick directions on how to use the new filter?
