I remember in 1988 working at my parent’s small family business, a real estate brokerage, that the technology used at that time was, well, just pathetic compared to what we use today.  We had a single low power PC sitting in the corner that ran the “MLS” system.  That computer had a 2400bps modem and a 12” CRT (big and bulky) display. 

We had no email, and most folks hadn’t even heard of the Internet back then.  Technical support was usually done over the phone directly to the manufacturer of the PC. If the computer was broken it was an inconvenience, but the business still operated.  We wrote checks by hand.  Bookkeeping was still done with pen and paper!

In 2008, the typical small business has multiple PCs.  They are usually connected in a network, and an Internet connection is essential.  It is a very rare instance when someone actually writes a check by hand; moreover, many transactions are all handled electronically via the bank’s web site.  Employees are using email as a primary means of communication and it is rare that someone doesn’t have at least one email account.

In 1988 if “the computer” was down at our office it was merely an inconvenience.  Business still went on as normal, and the computer would be fixed in about a week.  Technical support in those days was always “break/fix”.  The PC breaks, we wait for it to be fixed.

Today, if a small business network is down that small business might as well just go home.  Almost no work can be done!  No email means no communication.  No network means no access to files.  Even a printer down can cause serious delays in production.  Businesses today immediately feel the cost of outages as employees are unable to accomplish their jobs without the use of their computers.
